What If I Don't Have Phone Service Right Now?

This is one of the most common questions we get: "I don't have a phone plan right now — can I still get a phone from you?" The answer is yes, 100%. You don't need active phone service to lease or buy a phone from BuyCell Cleveland.

Here's why it doesn't matter and what your options are for getting service after you have the phone.

Our phones are unlocked

Every phone we sell or lease is fully unlocked. That means it's not tied to any carrier. You can activate it on any network you want, whenever you're ready. There's no activation required on our end — we hand you the phone, and you decide what to do with it.

This is different from buying a phone directly from a carrier, where it's usually locked to their network. Our phones work on all major carriers and prepaid providers.

You can use it on WiFi only

If you don't have a phone plan and aren't ready to get one yet, you can still use the phone on WiFi. Connect to your home WiFi, a library, a coffee shop — anywhere with a wireless network. On WiFi, you can:

• Browse the internet — everything works just like it would with data.
• Use social media — Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, all of it.
• Make calls and texts through apps — use WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Google Voice, or TextNow for free calling and texting over WiFi.
• Stream music and video — YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, all work on WiFi.
• Use email, banking apps, and everything else — basically everything a phone does, minus cellular data when you're away from WiFi.

A lot of our customers start out using their phone on WiFi while they save up for a plan. There's no rush — the phone is yours to use however you want.

Affordable prepaid options when you're ready

When you do decide to get phone service, you don't need a contract or a credit check. There are plenty of affordable prepaid carriers that work great with our unlocked phones:

• Cricket Wireless — plans start at $30/month for unlimited talk, text, and data. Uses AT&T's network.
• Metro by T-Mobile — plans start at $30/month. Good coverage in the Cleveland area.
• Mint Mobile — as low as $15/month if you pay for a few months upfront. Uses T-Mobile's network.
• Boost Mobile — plans from $25/month with unlimited talk and text.
• Straight Talk — available at Walmart, plans from $35/month, uses multiple networks.

All of these are no-contract, no credit check. Just buy a SIM card, pop it into your phone, activate online, and you're good to go. Some of them even let you keep your old phone number if you have one.

What about the lease application?

For the lease application, we do need a way to reach you. If you don't have a phone number right now, here are some workarounds:

• Use a free TextNow or Google Voice number — you can get a free phone number through these apps using WiFi. Use that number on your application.
• Use a friend or family member's number — someone who can relay messages to you until you get your own service set up.
• Come into the store — if you're local, just walk in. We can handle everything in person without needing to call or text you.

Do I need to buy a SIM card from you?

No. We don't sell phone plans or SIM cards. We just sell the phone. You get your service wherever you want, whenever you want. That separation is actually a good thing — it means you're never locked into any carrier and you can switch anytime without it affecting your lease.
